Don't rush transition

After nearly 20 years as an executive, my season ended differently than I had expected. My identity and reputation had revolved around my role and effectiveness as a leader. What now?

Some people view their transition experience as traumatic or confusing; they don’t see that it is much more. Charles Taylor, a Canadian philosopher, describes this attitude in his epic work, A Secular Age (Harvard University), as ‘the middle condition’, where –

“We have found a way to escape the forms of negation, exile, emptiness, without having reached fullness. We come to terms with the middle position, often through some stable, even routine order in life, in which we are doing things which have some meaning for us.”[1]

I believe Taylor would argue, that leaders who are unable to process and learn from periods of transition and isolation, mistakenly avoid attaching a greater purpose or sense of meaning to what they are going through. They might move on, but they do so in a less-fulfilled way.

In her book, Isolation – A Place of Transformation in the Life of a Leader, Shelley Trebesch encourages leaders who are going through a period of voluntary, or involuntary isolation, to process the time of transition more deeply in order so they understand what is happening and what is necessary to move into what comes next.[2]

Whether you prescribe to her Christian worldview or not, Trebesch offers some interesting insights, from which I will highlight two.

First, she addresses the process of ‘stripping’ away an identity that a leader has become dependent on, which can also hinder growth in other areas. In essence, this is where leaders may operate merely out of their strengths while ignoring other areas in which they are deficient.

Second, Trebesch highlights the importance of being in an uncomfortable position or a place of weakness. This allows the space for a leader to look toward the future with a different lens – a more meaningful and longer-term perspective. While the temptation may exist for a leader to try and get out of this awkward place as quickly as possible, Trebesch argues that to do so interrupts a process that has the potential to transform.

What’s the bottom-line?

I’m reminded of a title to one of Marshall Goldsmith’s books, “What Got You Here Will Not Get You There”.[3] In other words, what made you a successful leader and helped you get to where you are now is not necessarily what you need to achieve where you want to go next. This is why reframing your leadership narrative is such an important element within the 5 Leadership Anchors™. Below are some helpful reflections:

  1. Embark on an honest time of reflection of how you came to experience this period of voluntary, or involuntary, isolation – don’t avoid what might have caused it.
  2. Find a mentor, or coach, who can help you maintain a balanced perspective and reduce the risk of becoming too self-critical and judgmental of others who may have contributed to your time of isolation.
  3. Take on the challenge of journaling throughout the season, identifying the key things you have learned, progress that has been made and questions that still need to be answered.

Book Review Transitions: Making Sense of Life's Changes William Bridges   Making sense of life's transitions is not always easy. Okay, let's be honest. Sometimes it is incredibly difficult! We can often experience a range of emotions - hurt, anger, anxiety, fear and many more. Mix in a dose of confusion and disorientation and trying to discover that illusive ‘next step’ can be a little daunting. Bridges helps you navigate through life's transitions. Practical, and enormously insightful (and even inspiring in places), he helps the reader understand the difference between 'change' and 'transition' to ultimately appreciate that the end of one chapter is actually the beginning of another. His ability to confront the questions we all ask when we find ourselves in a transition is remarkable; questions such as “Why is letting go so difficult?” and “Why is this happening to me?” or “What do I do now?”. He speaks to the key transition stages of: Disengagement Dismantling Disidentification Disenchantment Disorientation[1] He argues it is not just the pace of change causing us to feel disoriented, but the fact that many have lost faith that the transitions they are going through are really taking them somewhere. This is just one of the problems he addresses in regards to the many people who find endings difficult. Endings are the first phase of transition. The second phase is a time of lostness and emptiness and the third phase is when life resumes an intelligible pattern and direction, putting our life on a whole new trajectory. "Dad how come you're not successful anymore?"
These words cut me to the core. I am not sure my 13-year old son, Ryan, fully appreciated the power of those words as they blew away all pretence and laid my heart open and bleeding. It was a real struggle trying to find the words to describe ‘success’ in a way that would make sense to a young boy growing up in a world where success was all about having a nice home, driving an expensive car, making lots of money, taking great vacations, the number of people reporting to you, what your position was, and the size of the business.  In the midst of concluding an executive role and launching a new business, my son had the perception that as I was no longer overseeing a multimillion-dollar budget responsible for hundreds of staff, that somehow, I was no longer successful. As I reflected on this later, I saw the importance of taking my children on a journey—warts and all, as they say—to show them that success can be so much more. To help them examine what can also lie beneath the words penned by Andre Delbecqby’s, “the failure of success, the corruption of triumph, and the danger of celebrity”. As insightful as this warning is, I would add the words “the success of failure”. I want my children to know that to feel as though you have failed is quite different to having failed at something. Failing in something does not have to negatively define your future, as learning from failure can create many great opportunities for growth and innovation. Feeling as though you are a failure, however, can have devastating consequences that will significantly limit what you can achieve and damage the relationships you need in your life that will help you get there. At the very worst, you often feel very much alone. Success today is very different to what I imagined it to be starting out thirty-five years ago. How has it changed for you?
